Tri-City NAACP Statement on the Death of Tyre Nichols

Tri-City NAACP is deeply saddened and outraged by the death of Tyre Nichols, a young father who lost his life at the hands of police officers. The fact that officers of the same race carried out the horrific incident as Tyre only highlights that police brutality knows no bounds. Police brutality is a systemic problem rooted in the culture of policing that the country must address through transparent and actionable plans, holding officers accountable and preventing such incidents from happening in the future.

We call on all local law enforcement agencies to examine the culture within their agencies and implement measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the communities they serve. Traffic stops should never result in a death sentence, and criminal acts by those sworn to protect the community should not be ignored.

We extend our deepest condolences to Tyre's family and stand in solidarity with them as they seek justice for his tragic death.
